Signs your water heater needs a repair (or needs to be replaced)

Your water heater could use a repair if:
  • You're not getting any hot water. This could mean an issue with the ignitor in gas water heaters or a heating element in electric water heaters. It could also mean an issue with the thermostat.
  • The water heater is making odd noises. A popping/knocking noise means there's sediment at the bottom of your tank, which you'll need to have a plumber flush out. You should have your water heater flushed annually to prevent other, more expensive repairs (like a burnt out heating element).
  • Your hot water is brown or rust-colored. Brown, rusty hot water typically means your anode rod (the part that prevents the tank itself from rusting) is corroding. This is normal for a water heater, but you should get the rod replaced sooner rather than later.
  • Pipe connections to the tank are leaking. A plumber can repair leaks where pipes connect to your water heater. But, if the tank itself has a crack in it and is leaking, you'll likely need to replace the water heater completely.
Note: If your water heater is old and inefficient, we highly recommend replacing it with a newer high-efficiency unit rather than having us try to fix old equipment. You'll save money on future repairs, plus your monthly utility bills will be lower.
